Denvention Contest assistance

Posted by [info]meltatum in [info]filk on 2008.05.08 at 19:27
I've written a song for Denvention's filk song contest, but the rules require that a recording be submitted as well as the lyrics.  My problem is I don't play any instrument on which I can accompany myself and without a solid melody line (which my voice does NOT supply), the song is unrecognizable.  I'm relatively new to filk (having only been in a few filk circles over the past year), and I've usually been lucky enough to prevail upon someone else in the circle to provide accompaniment.

I'm not sure what protocol is here, so please forgive me (and please let me know) if this request is inappropriate, but is there someone who would be willing to collaborate with me by recording the song?  The deadline is the end of this month, and a local musician friend was going to help me out, but his schedule has gone nuts and it doesn't look like we're going to get it recorded in time.

Thanks!
Mel

An Oldie....

...but a goodie, I found this recently in response to another thread on a friends' page. One of ten filks that I have currently sitting waiting to be part of the "FilkSingers Hymnal",. which I am attempting to finish this year. Anyone else who is writing irreverent, pagany-ish filks to hymn tunes, get in touch and if you have material I would be honored to include same.

Here's my hymn... )

I figured I'd better get this wound up before it disappears into the packing-to-move. If anyone knows how to get hold of this year's winner Brenda Lively online, please point her at the link.

History of early filk cons

Posted by [info]madfilkentist in [info]filk on 2008.05.03 at 07:06
At the prodding of Lee Gold on rec.music.filk, I've put up a page on the MASSFILC site on the history of early filk conventions (before the first OVFF in 1984). Currently the page is a collection of sometimes conflicting information from different people. If you can offer any corrections or additions, please comment either here or in the rec.music.filk thread.

Current Music: make something up!

[info]hms42 and I tested the train commute from NYC. It was a 65 minute ride for $11.25 one-way peak, and we had our misgivings about that. The closest station to the hotel is Morris Plains, a 5 min. car ride to the hotel. The schedules say there's weekend service once an hour, and a visit to www.njtransit.com would probably be more informative than two New Yorkers waiting for pick-up. But we made it without incident and picked up a lot of taxi service numbers. [info]akawilpicked us up from the job and we followed his phone's GPS directions to the hotel. Then the call came that [info]mamadeb & company were still in Staten Island.

We kept ourselves busy; I had hot chai tea and crumbcake to take with my pain pill (the knee went out on the train) and our missing members, [info]mamadeb, Miri and [info]otherdeb appeared by the time I was done. We visited our meeting rooms and I took some pictures (above).

I am jazzed about the Parsippany Hilton. (No, no, that's Hilton Parsippany!) Our location is spacious and I think we'll have lots of fun there. The rooms are still $99 per night (single thought quad) and we've been talking about expanding our room block. It's not too late! Call 973-267-7373 and reserve now! Goto www.contata.org to register for the con! Don't wait for the translation!

Avalon Rising/Broceliande videos on YouTube

Posted by [info]egoldberg in [info]filk on 2008.04.29 at 00:08
This isn't strictly filk.

But since the members of Avalon Rising & Broceliande have performed on countless filk albums - but have been rarely seen together outside of California conventions - I thought some folks might want to know that Kristoph Klover just put a dozen videos of these two bands up on YouTube at:

A friend and colleague just sent me the following question:

>  We just saw a local production of the 1776 musical. All my husband and I
> remember of the fannish version is "Sit down, Harlan! For ghu's sake,
> Harlan, sit down! Someone ought to open up a bottle!" Can you help us out on
> the title, plot, and a place to find the lyrics of the fannish version?

Anyone?

She also asked about "Shuggoth on the Roof(?)" [sic], but that was easy to answer, starting with the spelling.

Aussiecon II performers

I'm missing the insert for one of my old filk tapes: Aussiecon II: The Wail from Down Under.

I was wondering if anyone could provide the names of the performers, or a scan of the insert?

Thanks!

New Songs

Current Mood: anxious
Many moons ago, I requested lyrics from some various folks to add to my list of songs to cover.

I'm ashamed to say that I haven't touched most of them until today.

Playing at Marcon is rather driving my efforts to learn something fresh.

I'm open to suggestion for songs to learn. These can be older songs that haven't had much play that you love, or newer stuff. I am completely out of the loop for what folks are finding interesting as I've been away from the convention circuit for quite a while.
